Q & A with Carl Jenkins '66

1/3/2003
Q. Why did you join the fraternity?
A. I joined KA because I really liked the diversity of men in the fraternity. It seemed that other houses were more stereotyped. I was correct and the experience was outstanding.

Q. What is your favorite memory of the fraternity?
A. I don't have any one memory that sticks out. The whole journey was enjoyable. One amusing occurrence was the year that Georgia beat Florida on a Bobby Etter touchdown at the end of the game, and a certain brother who is the mayor of an East Georgia city now, was so excited that he pressed flesh to glass on the inside of our car. I'm sure that he would like to have this brought up in his next campaign.

Q. What kind of influence has the fraternity had on your life since graduation?
A. The influence of the "Southern Gentleman" mentality has stayed with me and the many brothers in all of those Georgia towns has been invaluable.

Q. Tell us about your family. Are you married? Do you have children?
A. I'm married to the former Pat Brown, a Georgia cheerleader and I have three daughters and four grandchildren at this time. Pat and I have been married for 35 years.

Q. What other organizations or activities did you take part in while in school?
A. I played football at Kansas University and transferred to Georgia. I was a part of the program under Johnny Griffith, which was not too enjoyable.

Q. What is your nickname and how did you get it?
A. Bucky and it was given to me on the day that I was born.

Q. Did you live in the house? Who were your roommates?
A. I lived in the house for a couple of years. My roommate for the longest time was Neely Young '63 who never made an 8:00 a.m. class in his college career. However, Neely has gone on to be a successful publisher. He was responsible for me spending the only night that I ever spent in jail in Myrtle Beach, S.C. It did teach me that I never wanted that to happen again!

Q. What do you do for a living?
A. I market financial products: insurance, annuities, mutual funds, etc. I also am a licensed realtor. My company is Jenkins & Associates and Island Realty.

Q. What hobbies do you enjoy?
A. Golf and fishing.

Q. What are your goals for the next few years?
A. To have the option of retiring, but not retire.
