Mark Howard ’79: “…but my dream never expired.”Q: Why did you join KA Order in the first place?

A: I identified with the brothers there. We shared the same ethics and principals.  And I liked that KA's spiritual founder was Robert E. Lee, that we were Southern gentlemen and that we treated women with respect.

Q: What’s your favorite memory from your time in the chapter?

A: Football Saturdays and the jam sessions afterwards. Also, giving bid presentations and, surprisingly enough, the chapter meetings.

Q: Do you still keep in touch with any of your brothers?

A: Yes, I remain close to many and keep up with a lot of others through social media as well.

Q: Tell us about the company you are an owner of.

A: The motivation for launching Howard Financial Group initially came after my father passed away, and I saw firsthand how it impacted our family.

Fortunately, my dad had prepared well for the unexpected. Still, his passing changed the trajectory and focus of what I was doing at the time, and it gave me a newfound dedication and passion for helping others understand the importance of proper financial planning, especially in the area of retirement income planning.

With the help of many people, it took me years to learn everything that I needed to learn to start my own firm, but my dream never expired. We help people every day improve their financial situation.

Q: How did your time in KA Order help to prepare you for that role?

A: I believe that KA gave me the opportunity to mature and grow in a lot of ways, especially as a leader. The fraternity went through some challenging moments while I was there, and I was asked to represent the chapter in some important meetings with the university administration to ensure the chapter kept going.

Q: What have you been up to since graduation?

A: Raising a family and getting better every day at being a father, in my spiritual walk, and in my career.

Q: What would you say is your biggest accomplishment?

A: Two wonderful children, Haley, who's now 27, and Ross, who's 24.

Q: What advice would you give to future generations of KA Order members?

A: You don't realize it at the time, but the contacts and experiences you have in college and through KA will shape you for years to come.
